I don’t think we take enough time to appreciate the periods in our life when our noses aren’t runny. Is your nose runny right now? No? Think about that. Honestly reflect on it. Enjoy this era of peace. There are dark times on the horizon

Our freshly-graduated writer Dr. Manik Aggarwal responds to a medical emergency on a flight … ten days after graduating from medical school.

When you’re a student, you hear about these situations with awe and can’t wait for the day that you’re wise enough to actually use your skills to help people. The closer you get to graduating, the more these actual situations, in which you’re lacking in resources and senior support, and placed in a situation you’ve not been trained for, fill you with dread. Yet your career will be filled with moments that bring you out of your comfort zone, although hopefully never out of the realms of your competence.

Thank you to those like Dr Aggarwal for sharing their experiences of their challenging moments, in turn preparing the rest of us to face ours.

Thank you for your comments! Check out the rest of Dr. Aggarwal’s writing in his column “Storytellers" on in-Training, the online magazine for medical students.
